Despite the somewhat odd sounding name, making a page at Squidoo is a great way to earn money writing articles without having to have a website or blog of your own. In fact, because Squidoo is an established web site which is both popular with the major search engines and has a lot of ‘built in’ traffic of its own, it is a quick way to put your articles online and start earning money almost immediately.

Squidoo is an interesting web site created by marketing guru and best selling author Seth Godin. The idea behind Squidoo is that everyone is an expert on at least something but maybe that person doesn’t want to create anything more than a single extremely useful page on the subject. Squidoo calls these pages “lenses” and encourages you to create a lens on anything which takes your fancy. Of course, if you are looking to make money from a lens, the chances are you will want to make a lens on something which stands more of a chance at making money than “everything you always wanted to know about toejam”…although you’d be surprised at how many visitors that kind of information receives!

The easiest way to describe Squidoo and how you can make money with Squidoo lenses is to show you a lens in action. This is a lens I created on fold up treadmills a while ago. It’s not the best lens in the world and it didn’t take all that long to create either, but it illustrates how easy a lens is to create and at least one of the ways in which one can be monetised. Everytime someone clicks through and buys a treadmill, or anything else on the Amazon site, I receive a commission. Some of those treadmills are over $1000 in value which at a commission level which works out to around 4% isn’t too shabby a return.

There are other built in modules you can use through the lens editor to add different kinds of content to your lens, including other money making squidoo lens modules like the Ebay module, Allposters and other affiliate modules. If you use any of these built in modules, you split your commission 50-50 with Squidoo - the price you pay for the increased level of visitors you will receive by having pages on a well established, popular sites like Squidoo.

The really nice thing about Squidoo is you do not have to use these inbuilt affiliate modules, as there is no restriction on you promoting any other affiliate links you choose to. You can promote Clickbank products, your own products and services, Commission Junction and links from other affiliate networks and for these, the commission you earn is 100% yours to keep.

Squidoo, allows you to make a lens on anything you like, including a purely promotional lens describing your blog or an aspect of your business. You can use your lens therefore, to drive traffic to your other online money makers, to your personal pages, your ebay auctions or just about anything else you want to direct more people towards. Perhaps you want to draw attention to your favourite charities? A squidoo lens is a great way to do this as well and in addition, Squidoo allows you to donate the money you make to charity if you like.

A further advantage of Squidoo is the profit-sharing aspect of the site. Depending on the amount of hits your lens receives and the overall ranking in Squidoo’s internal system of ranking pages, you will earn a share of Squidoo’s own profits. This profit share is pretty low for your lowest ranking lenses, but (at the current time) is over $10 a month for the higher ranking lenses (around the top 2000) and around $2 a month for mid-ranking lenses (2000 - 10000). This little payout is in addition to any sales you make through Squidoo’s built in modules and any outside affiliate sales you make.

Squidoo makes it easy for anyone to start making money online and even if you are a seasoned affiliate marketer, blogger etc. this site still has great potential for promoting your existing money making websites, ebooks or personal businesses.
